Description
From the Gümmenen station to the main road, cross it, then ascend towards the slightly elevated plateau. At the edge of the Faverwald, descend on a stair path to the narrow pasture floor of Haselau. Occasionally through tall grass, continue following the dam path. At the motorway viaduct, briefly switch to the forest, but soon turn back to the flood protection dam. Along a Hornusser meadow, the route leads to the rather luxuriously designed Saanesteg, which is only used by cyclists and pedestrians. The continuing, sometimes overgrown path follows the left bank of the Saane to the cozy corner where the Saane and the Aare merge. Across the river stands the banded Runtigenflue. On its northern spur once stood Oltigen Castle. Legends and ghost stories tell of brutal lords, revengeful jealousy, incitement, murder, and manslaughter. Through lonely wilderness, the path passes reed-covered ponds lined with ash and willow to Witteberg. Along the Niederried reservoir, one reaches Au to the power plant at the end of the lake. Across Niederried, the edge of the Bargenholz, the Aare riverbank path, and the power plant’s dam, one reaches Aarberg.
