Description
Welcome to the Interregio Hiking Trail! Together, we explore the tri-border area between Switzerland, France, and Germany and discover a fascinating and varied piece of Europe! The three major hiking clubs of the region, the hiking trails of both Basels, the Vosges club, and the Black Forest Association have jointly maintained this cross-border trail since the 1980s, which has now been revised and newly marked to invite you to discover the tri-border region!
The fourth stage starts in the Vorderes Wiesental in the municipality of Steinen, one of five gateways to the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. Sandstone quarries in the Buntsandstein were the origin of the village's name. The Buntsandstein extracted here was used, among other things, for the construction of Basel Cathedral. The geologically significant Dinkelberg is also notable. On its highest point stands the lookout tower „Hohe Flum“. It offers magnificent views over the Southern Black Forest, Vosges, Jura, and Alps. The geological features of the Dinkelberg are showcased in the Geo-Museum Dinkelberg, located directly on the Hochrhein. It is best combined with a visit to the Tschamber Cave, an active stream cave. The show cave in the karstified shell limestone of the Dinkelberg is traversed by a Rhine tributary.
Beuggen Castle on the Hochrhein was built in 1246 as a castle of the Teutonic Order. Around 1815, Kaspar Hauser is said to have lived in the castle. Until 2016, it was a conference and meeting place for the Evangelical Church in Baden. It is now used as a hotel and, with its park, is no longer accessible to the public.
