Description
In the landscape shaped by the Ice Age between the present-day Thurgau municipalities of Langrickenbach and Bottighofen, the melting glaciers have formed an extensive system of ravines. The Stichbach and its tributaries form beautiful stream ravines in the meltwater channel of the Upper Freshwater Molasse. Botanically valuable are the mighty oaks up to 200 years old. To preserve the habitat for rare animal and plant species as well as the near-natural cultural landscape, a 44-hectare forest area was designated as the Liebburg special forest reserve on 1.1.2012. It complements the existing oak protection areas along Lake Constance.
At the western edge of the ravine, the Swiss army began building the Fortress Belt Kreuzlingen from 1937 to secure the land border to the German Reich with numerous infantry bunkers, many of which remain as monuments today. Although no shots had to be fired from these, regular shooting exercises take place today, whose dates must be observed.
