Description
If you prefer something a bit flatter than some other hikes in the hilly Basel region, the easy walk from Frenkendorf to Augst is just right. Starting from the Frenkendorf village center, you head north – and simultaneously back in history. The first stop is the Hülftendenkmal, located in the small forest between allotment gardens and the railway line. It commemorates the battle at the nearby Hülftenschanz, where the Basel countryside troops decisively defeated Basel city forces on August 3, 1833, during the separation struggles, thereby sealing the formation of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. The walk continues through the Hülftengraben to the lower course of the Ergolz River, which flows wide and at a leisurely pace here. Following the river leads straight into Roman times: to Augusta Raurica, once an important city with up to 15,000 inhabitants. Even today, you can admire the best-preserved Roman theatre north of the Alps. Naturally, besides the famous theatre, various other impressive buildings attract attention, such as the temple on Schönbühl, the underground well house discovered only about twenty years ago, or the current special exhibition in the museum. You can explore the Roman city in a very special way with the Swiss-O-Finder: on an approximately 45-minute tour, you can experience the fascination of Antiquity at eleven different stations, similar to an orienteering course. A perfect finale is a visit to the Cedro Römerhof restaurant before comfortably returning to Liestal by bus.
