Description
On the last stage we cross national borders several times. The covered wooden bridge Rheinau spans the High Rhine between the German town Altenburg, a district of Jestetten, and Rheinau in the canton of Zurich. The customs bridge from 1804 is one of the rare surviving pile bridges today. The town with its stately houses is surrounded on three sides by the Rhine and neighboring Germany. On a Rhine island lies the former Benedictine monastery Rheinau. The second prominent Rhine bend encloses the peninsula "Schwaben". Remains of the Celtic wall used to fortify the settlement "Schanz" can still be seen here today. The path along the bank leads to Wörth Castle with the roaring Rhine Falls on the opposite side. On the north side of the Rhine Falls, mills operated until the 18th century, which were allowed to use a small part of the water power.
