Description

The 5th stage of the Veloland Route No. 6 leads from Thusis through the dizzying Viamala Gorge into the lovely Schams Valley, past the Roffla Gorge and up into the Rheinwald over Sufers to Splügen.

The Schams Valley forms the middle of the three valley chambers along the Hinterrhein and extends from Zillis via Andeer to the Roffla Gorge. The 12th-century Church of St. Martin in Zillis with its unique ceiling painting is as worth seeing as the charming mountain village of Andeer with its mineral bath.

After Andeer, the route goes via Bärenburg to the Roffla Gorge. Before tackling the next ascent into the Rheinwald, the upper valley chamber of the Hinterrhein, a stop at the Roffla Gorge guesthouse and a visit to the rock gallery with the waterfall are worthwhile. Upon arriving in Sufers at the Sufner reservoir, the route then continues comfortably to Splügen.

Splügen was an important muleteer village on the north-south Alpine transit route, which was the most important for centuries, at the junction to the Splügen Pass and the San Bernardino Pass. The Italian-looking stone houses and the sun-browned Walser houses shape the historic and protected villagescape.

The stretch between Thusis and Rongellen below the Viamala Gorge can alternatively also be covered on the recommended traffic-free Viamala path through the Verlorna Loch.
