Description
Do you know what a moor is? Moors are very special landscapes that can only form where water is constantly standing in the ground. Their development takes an extremely long time, they are very rare and therefore strictly protected. In the Mooraculum Sörenberg we find ourselves in the middle of such a moor landscape, which bears the label "of national importance" and is one of the last in Switzerland. Extraordinary animals live here, there are carnivorous plants, and mosses form the characteristic peat soil – which grows about 1 mm per year. So, it takes 1000 years to form one meter of peat. Fascinating, isn’t it?
Expedition into the unknown But that is not the only secret to be discovered on the Great Moor Circular Trail. The adventure path leads about 5 km from Rossweid, over Salwiden, back to Rossweid. The unique habitat, its origin, its plants and animals with their diverse survival strategies, but also the myths, images, and stories surrounding the moor, are the focus of this varied hike. Expedition guests are accompanied by six experts who have spent their lives here and know all the secrets of the moor: wolf, lynx, grass frog, swamp cricket, high moor mosaic dragonfly, and capercaillie appear at the 17 experience stations and tell their personal stories – over the moor phone!
Exploring the moor as researchers But you have to explore the moor secrets yourselves: The experience stops are interactive, here you have to solve puzzles, combine correctly and show spirit of discovery. Tree trunks will reveal valuable information, you can build moor artworks and have to balance the moor equilibrium. And if you gather all your courage, you might meet the moor demon… For real adventurers, there is a researcher set to pick up at the valley or mountain station of the Rossweid gondola lift, with a personal expedition equipment. Magnifying glass, compass & co will help you collect exciting research results. Additionally, you can solve tricky tasks on the way and enter them in your moor whisperer pass. With the right solutions, a researcher reward awaits at the end. But quietly now, we must whisper: don’t tell anyone the solution word!
The largest moor water park in the Alps This challenging expedition tour is best done with the whole family. The circular trail takes about 4-5 hours, and of course there are wonderful rest stops along the way where you can relax your soul. After a successful research hike, you can play and have more adventures in the moor water park at Rossweid. For those still in stroller and who do not want to walk far, the short stroller-friendly route is recommended. Off to the moor adventure!
