Description

The first geological hiking trail in Switzerland opens up insights into the formation and geological diversity of the southern Alpstein chain for earth science interested hikers. Twenty themed panels along the ridge path explain fascinating phenomena of the surrounding mountain world.

The sporty mountain hike to Hoher Kasten starts in Brülisau at the Kastenbahn with a moderate ascent to Sämtisersee. After the mountain guesthouse Bollenwees, the path steepens through Saxer Lücke up to Furgglenfirst and the mountain guesthouse Staubern. The alpine ridge path continues to Hoher Kasten. Not only from the revolving restaurant does it offer a panoramic view of the Rhine Valley and Appenzellerland, Lake Constance and the mountains of the neighboring countries Germany, Austria, and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Via Kastensattel, it then descends steeply over 800 meters back to the starting point. A more comfortable - but expensive at 28 CHF - alternative is the cable car.
