Description

The Gauli region came into the public eye during the Second World War. In late autumn 1946, an American airplane crashed on the Gauli Glacier in poor visibility. Thanks to an unconventional rescue operation, all twelve passengers were rescued alive.

The starting point for the hut hike is the Urbachtal. The path winds through the mountain maple-spruce forest towards Schrätteren. It goes steeply up to the junction “Holzfadghirmi.” The left-branching path leads via Mattenalpsee to the Gaulihütte. Our route description turns right over the steep and rocky Hohwang flank to Tälligrat. Once there, the view sweeps over the magnificent glacier world in the rear Gauli area. The last meters lead over small raised bogs to the hut.

The return path goes via Mattenalpsee. The trail leads steeply down through the moorland of Träjen to the lake. The path up to Holzfadghirmi is partly exposed and secured at the exposed sections. From the junction “Holzfadghirmi,” ascent and descent are identical.
