Description

The first meters of elevation are quickly overcome via well-secured slabs (A/B). Warmed up, you continue over a short, steeper pillar (B) into the traverse (A), which leads to the cave entrance. The highlight of the route is coming up: the Gauablickhöhle awaits to be explored. Don’t forget to switch on the headlamp as it becomes pitch dark. The cave is secured along the entire length. Back in daylight, a small bench on the right invites you to pause and enjoy the view. On the left side, there is a short traverse into the second exhilarating via ferrata section. Soon you reach the key point of this via ferrata—a small overhang (C). Just above this on the left is the emergency exit (blue-white-blue trail). However, the last section entices with technically beautiful climbing. Over ramps and steeper steps with many clamps, the route ascends vertically to the exit.

Approach (all approach routes are marked mountain hiking trails):

  • From St. Antönien Garstett (parking lot 6) via Partnunsee through Gemschtobel, then through Im Rachen approx. 4.5 h.

  • From Carschinahütte through Gemschtobel, then through Im Rachen approx. 3 h.

  • From Tilisunahütte via the Karrenfelder, then through Im Rachen approx. 2 h.

TIP: Summit seekers can make a detour on the approach above Gemschtobel to Sulzfluh (approx. 20 minutes, 117 meters elevation, 2817 m above sea level)
