Description

It is recommended to visit the monastery ruins of Rüeggisberg. The Cluniac priory dating back to the eleventh century was one of the most important Swiss monastic complexes in the Middle Ages and a station on the Way of St. James from Constance to Santiago de Compostela. At the starting point of the hike at the Rüeggisberg Post bus stop, follow the direction to Hasli. The first section follows the route of the Alpenpanorama Trail 3. Rightly so – one thinks – when looking around. The view offers the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to the Niesen, over the Stockhorn chain to the Schüpfeflue up to the Guggershörnli. On a field path you reach Mättiwil over level ground and climb up to the Tannwald. In the forest, the path initially rises gently. At the junction of the Alpenpanorama Trail and the Way of St. James, roughly at the highest point, you continue hiking towards Hasli. Shortly after the forest, the first destination is reached. The signpost already indicates the next intermediate goal: Abegg Foundation. After crossing the hamlet of Ey, the view opens into the Gürbetal. Shortly afterwards you reach the Gürbetal High Trail and continue via Eybrunne to the Abegg Foundation. Its purpose is the collection, preservation, and research of historical textiles. The exhibition can be visited from April to early November. For the last section of the hike, the destination is Thurnen. This stretch also offers variety: foot- and forest paths or the ravine of the Mühlibach with a rest area. A little later you reach the village of Mühlethurnen with the regional event venue Alti Moschti. Those interested in culture can enjoy a wide range of events here.
