Description
Starting from the Berghotel Schwägalp (new: Säntis - the hotel), we follow the marked snowshoe route to the Kronberg. After the alpine settlement Siebenhütten, the path gently climbs to the Chammhaldenhütte, where there is the first opportunity to stop. Then we cross the Bruggerwald.
This belongs to the forest reserve "Bruggerwald-Kronberg", which is an important habitat for the endangered Western Capercaillie. These shy forest birds do not hibernate and therefore have to manage with the few food sources that nature provides in winter. They can grow up to 90 cm long and weigh 4.5 kg, and are very sensitive to disturbance. If they suddenly take flight, it costs them a lot of energy. Therefore, nature lovers will follow the usually clearly visible trail markings. Additionally, it is officially forbidden to leave marked hiking trails in wildlife protection areas.
There are still 300 meters of altitude to overcome to the summit of the Kronberg. After the effort of the ascent, a magnificent panoramic view awaits us.
