Description
Once we arrive in Burgdorf, we are enchanted by the view. The castle towers above us on a rock overlooking the town, and the striking sandstone formations of the Gysnauflühe rise up before us on the right bank of the Emme. This Gysnauflühe and the former Zähringer fortress are landmarks of the town that can be wonderfully combined on this family-friendly discovery tour.
From the train station, we first descend to the Emme and the Waldeggbrücke bridge. After crossing the bridge and the river, we climb up the Waldegghole to reach the Gysnauflühe nature reserve. The hiking trail winds from one rock formation to the next through the forest and offers children numerous discoveries: Lizards hiding under old roots, mushrooms to marvel at and, from the first rock platform, a wonderful view of the town and the castle. Another adventure awaits us on the steep descent to St. Bartholomew's Chapel, which used to serve as a chapel of worship for lepers who had to live outside the city walls. Today, the chapel is a place of worship, weddings and concerts. We cross the Wynigebrücke bridge back to the Emme and from there take a leisurely stroll back to Burgdorf railroad station.
