Description

The first stage of the Emerald Trail starts at St. Moritz station. From there, follow the lake promenade for about fifteen minutes until the path branches off uphill to the Landhotel Meierei. Following the asphalt road, you reach Stazersee (Lej da Staz). On the other side of the lake, the path now leads towards St. Moritz Bad, accompanied by information boards that provide much knowledge about moorlands. This area was proposed by WWF as an Emerald site, a protected natural landscape. Through a very beautiful coniferous forest with blueberry undergrowth, you reach a clearing at the edge of a raised bog after another 30 minutes. At the next junction, keep left to reach the peat meadows. In earlier years, peat was removed for the moor baths at the spa. The path runs straight through the forest, past the playground, up to a church in the forest, the «Eglise au bois». Continuing straight ahead, past the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, you reach a spacious meadow and past the Olympic ski jump to Lej Marsch. From there, it goes uphill in about 10 minutes to Lej Nair, where two more information boards stand near the front lake shore. The path then leads up to Lej Zuppò and along the Palüd Lungia moor. Now follows the descent to Surlej, where you are treated to a breathtaking view over the Silvaplaner and Silser lakes among the original larches and Swiss stone pines. On the way towards Silvaplana, near Crap da Sass castle, leave the road towards Sils. The path leads along Silvaplanersee in about an hour to Furtschellas and then further to Sils.
