Description
The Wine Route already offers a first highlight shortly after the start in Schaffhausen: the roaring waters of the Rhine Falls. Then it goes through the Zurich wine region shaped by small villages and neat half-timbered houses. Before the route nestles up to the Thur river at the Thurgau border, a short rest at the idyllic Husemersee is worthwhile.
Through the wide valley plain of the Thur, on whose well-sunned slopes the vines for exquisite Thurgau wine grow, the route leads to Kartause Ittingen. Viticulture was already known to the monks who founded this former monastery. In addition to wine, hops are also grown, cheese is made from farm-fresh milk, and rainbow trout are bred. Via Pfyn, a small town with a rich Roman past and along the vine-covered Ottoberg, you finally reach Weinfelden.
