Description
The route from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg runs along the white Lütschine and past the Trümmelbach Falls, considered the largest underground waterfalls in Europe. The alpine topography naturally offers little space for Nordic cross-country skiing. Nevertheless, there is the trail in the valley floor between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. And it is spectacular: The path between the two mountain villages is flanked by a total of 72 waterfalls. The trail always runs along the White Lütschine, past the iced cascades.
A highlight is the Trümmelbach Falls (open from April to November), which you glide past in a loop. The name describes the sometimes loud drumming of these largest underground waterfalls in Europe. In winter, somewhat quieter due to the ice, the Trümmelbach drains the glacier walls of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Shortly before the destination, the Mürrenbachfall is passed. It holds another record: The masses of water plunge over 417 meters in five cascades. It is thus the highest waterfall in Switzerland.
The trail leads to Stechelberg and back to Lauterbrunnen. The valley end is a large nature reserve and part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. Stechelberg is the starting point of various high mountain routes.
