Description
The cross-country trail in Elm is located in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Tektonikarena Sardona and leads through the charming mountain village awarded with the Wakker Prize.
The 7-kilometer-long trail starts behind the community center. The first part of the trail, "Meadow," runs almost flat past the listed houses. While gliding along, there is ample time to enjoy the mountain panorama with the Tschingelhörner peaks and Martinsloch. Then, after crossing the bridge, comes the "Bear Step" section, which has the steepest ascent on the route. Once at the top, the trail follows the forest edge to Aeschen. There is the Aeschen Stone, which crashed down into the valley during the Elm rockslide in 1881. Around 10 million cubic meters of slate rock broke off and fell hundreds of meters freely into the valley. The rock masses buried 114 people and destroyed 83 buildings—something almost unimaginable today given the idyllic and peaceful atmosphere of the cross-country skiing area.
