Description
The route through the Switzerland-Austria-Liechtenstein area offers the hiker an extremely attractive variety of cultural and natural attractions.
The journey often follows rivers (Rhine, Aare, Limmat) and lets you enjoy the river landscapes in all their facets. Two larger lakes (Lake Zurich, Lake Constance) offer opportunities either to be traveled by ship or to hike along their shores.
Interesting insights into history arise during the hike, as there are impressive witnesses especially from Roman times along the way: Augusta Raurica (Augst), Vindonissa (Windisch), Arbor Felix (Arbon), Brigantium (Bregenz), Curia (Chur). Paths that the Romans had laid out are traversed (excavations near Schaan in FL, Septimer Pass).
Of course, cities are also to be crossed where staying for a while might be worthwhile (Basel, Zurich, St. Gallen, Bregenz, Vaduz, Chur). And almost countless are the charming places that make the path a sequence of attractions.
The 2nd stage of the Columban route leads from Rheinfelden to Laufenburg.
