Description
This route starts right at the Zürchersmühle station, first crosses the Urnäsch river and then follows a small brook eastward. Part of the initial ascent to the hamlet of Ramsten goes through forest, which is especially pleasant in summer. The path then follows the ridge up to its summit. Impressive Nagelfluh rock faces and idyllic alpine meadows shape the scenery. The view already extends far over the hilly Appenzell landscape. From the Hundwiler Höhi, looking south, you can also see the Alpstein mountain range with Kronberg and Säntis as notable landmarks.
The descent back to the starting point follows a smaller ridge, initially through a light forest and then over alpine meadows. If there are cows grazing here in summer, you can enjoy the sounds of cowbells amid the gentle, almost untouched landscape. The view stretches across many farmhouses, scattered loosely all over Appenzell. According to legend, a giant once passed by here carrying a sack full of farmhouses. The sack had a hidden hole and so the houses were spread across the whole region.
