Description
The great importance of Frauenwinkel was already recognized at the beginning of the 20th century by the Schwyz government. It declared Frauenwinkel a sanctuary for water and marsh birds. In 1929, it was designated as a nature reserve for the first time. Initial prohibitions were signed by the president of ALA (Swiss Society for Ornithology and Bird Protection) and the president of the district court. The broadly supported, strict protection with penalties that were harsh for the time is remarkable. In an initial perimeter, the island of Lützelau was excluded but only the island of Ufnau was included. Thanks to its high landscape value, Frauenwinkel was included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance and designated with a new, larger protection perimeter. The valuable moorland was recognized and included in the inventory of fens as well as moor landscapes of national importance.
