Description
No matter which direction you trudge or where you look: The Stazerwald enchants with its old, gnarled trees and the magical moor clearings. The landscape is a heritage of the Ice Age, shaped by glaciers of earlier times. Moist depressions, low and high moors formed. The 35-hectare moor area is not continuous but spread throughout the whole region. In the middle is Lake Stazer, surrounded by larches, stone pines, and Scots pines.
It is worth pausing now and then on the relatively flat snowshoe trail through this natural monument of national importance and listening. Even now in winter, the forest is inhabited. Those who are quiet can hear birds chirping or squirrels jumping up the trees.
The snowshoe route can be started from Pontresina station (cross-country skiing centre) or in Celerina at the bridge leading into the Stazerwald (San Gian church) and hiked as a one-way or round trip.
