Description
The Jörgenberg ruins lie on the outermost rock spur of a long ridge east of the municipality of Waltensburg. Jörgenberg was, alongside Kropfenstein, Grünenfels Castle, and Vogelberg Castle, one of the originally four castles in Waltensburg, and was already settled in the Middle Bronze Age. Jörgenberg is first mentioned in 765 in Bishop Tello's testament as a castellum.
The hike begins in the center of Waltensburg village. Culture lovers will also enjoy a detour to the church of Waltensburg. The reformed church is a gem among churches. Particularly valuable from an art-historical perspective are the frescoes by an unknown master from around 1330. You continue hiking to the end of the village, where the path leads further to the castle Munt Sogn Gieri/Jörgenberg. The two stone columns of a former gallows on the way to the castle ruin Munt Sogn Gieri are witnesses to this lively past. The supposed witches, warlocks, and other offenders met their end at this gallows.
The trail markings in the description of this route are based on the 1:25000 hiking map for Brigels, Waltensburg, Andiast. The hiking map is available at the Brigels tourist office, in the Volg stores in Andiast and Waltensburg, and at the Hotel Postigliun in Andiast.
