Castle route Waldenburg castle ruin

The municipality of Waldenburg is located at the end of the Waldenburg valley in the folded Jura and has long held town rights. Who knows, it might even be the smallest "small town" in Europe, as described by the team at Restaurant Leue Waldenburg? The hike leads right through the picturesque village center and then steadily uphill to the Waldenburg ruin. Along the way, a stop at the Gerstel rest area with covered fire pit, bench, and fountain is worthwhile. Children can play on the large meadow. The ruin is located on the narrow Rehag rock ridge and is thus strategically well placed above the pass road over the upper Hauenstein. Waldenburg was built around the year 1200 by Count Hermann of Frohburg. Since the oldest parts of the castle are slightly older than the small town, it can be assumed that the castle was built to charge tolls for the pass road. A branch of the Frohburg family even named itself after Waldenburg over time. Please watch your children carefully when visiting the ruin – there are steep slopes and exposed spots. Sure-footedness is required. A beautiful forest path leads back to Waldenburg.
