Description
The trail starts in the architecturally award-winning pass village of Splügen. Where once the Walser as packers transported their goods with animals over the pass, the trail gently climbs the viaSpluga to the Splügen Pass. The restored pack trail offers views of the spectacular switchbacks of the pass. At the Splügen Pass, 2114 m above sea level and directly on the Italian border, the path branches left and leads steeply uphill past the idyllic mountain lake. From here it continues up a rocky terrain level to Lago Azzurro at 2428 m above sea level. Along the right shore of the lake, the path continues until it descends to Montespluga, where some Italian flair can be enjoyed. Now the viaSpluga is followed in reverse direction back to Switzerland. At the old avalanche gallery, turn left and follow it to the Berghaus.
Crossing the road, follow the trail along the eastern flank of the Alpeltistock always in the direction of Tanazhöhe (mountain station of the ski area at Splügen). At the waypoint Bi den Trög, the path branches left down the slope into the basin of Piz Tambo to Tamboalp. From here, follow the alpine road that leads downstream over the Tambo Creek. After a wooded section, you return to the pass road. From here, follow the hiking trails down into the valley to Splügen.
