Description

From the demonstration cheese dairy, two snowshoe circular routes are signposted. Both trails first lead south into the snowy moorland La Sagne. Peat was mined here during the Second World War. Today the area is extensively protected. At the foot of the north slope of Montbautier, the two trails split. The easier route (blue) stays on the plateau and continues eastward into the La Rouge Eau area.

The more difficult route (red) climbs up a snowy forest road to Sur Montbautier. Those who make the ascent are greeted with a delightful winter landscape as they leave the forest. Apart from some Jura farms, the area is almost deserted. The gentle ascent through thickly snow-covered fir trees to the highest point is pure snowshoe enjoyment. At the top, there is also a great panoramic view of the Vallée de Tavannes and the surrounding Jura heights.

The subsequent descent heads southward, first gently over snowy meadows and then steeply through the forest. Soon you meet the Bellelay – La Fuet road and thus the easy route. Caution is advised when crossing the road! The two routes now lead without significant elevation changes via the farms La Bottière and Grosse Fin over the snowy plateau towards the abbey village.

Those who like to try more Tête de Moine or fancy a fondue can then stop by the demonstration cheese dairy and stock up for dinner.
