Description

The hike starts at Sommerau station, on the oldest railway line between Basel and the Mittelland. From here, it leads through the quiet Chrindeltal with its rare, renatured floodplain forest – a true natural jewel in the karstic Jura region. Soon follows the Rünenberger Giessen, whose water plunges over an 18-meter-high, overhanging rock edge – an impressive natural spectacle.

After an initial ascent to sunny Rünenberg with its tree gardens, the path leads down into the narrow Eital and past imposing rock walls and mysterious caves to Wenslingen. In one of the caves, researchers discovered bones and teeth of cave bears.

Between Wenslingen and Oltingen, numerous cherry trees shape the landscape. Especially in spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the Chirsiweg becomes a true spectacle of blossoms. (Current information about the cherry blossom can be found on the Bluescht-Ticker from Baselland Tourism). In summer, when the fruits are ripe, farm shops along the way offer fresh cherries and other regional products. In autumn, the cherry trees glow in warm orange-yellow tones, giving the landscape a colorful, atmospheric farewell to the year.

The villages along the Chirsiweg radiate the typical charm of the Upper Basel region. They impress with their well-maintained farmhouses, picturesque fountains, and authentic village character.

The historic center of Oltingen, the destination of the Chirsiweg, is largely preserved in its original form. Particularly worth seeing is the impressive ensemble of church, rectory, and parsonage garden. Art lovers can admire the late Gothic frescoes here, which embody both historical significance and artistic beauty.

Note: In the Eital (between Rünenberg and Wenslingen), the hike passes through the area of the Eital shooting range. The route can be walked at any time. However, loud noises may occur. Please check the shooting schedule before your hike: https://www.fs-tecknau.ch/
