Appenzell-Rheintal route

A small climb takes you from Appenzell through the Möser landscape, past traditional farms, to Eggerstanden. The impressive view of the entire Alpstein, whose three mountain chains meet at the Säntis, rewards the effort. The matte green hills with a view over the Appenzellerland show the beauty of the scattered settlement from a special perspective. Now follow the signpost towards Oberriet. The upcoming descent through the Kobelwald offers views over the wide Rhine Valley. At halfway, a sign points to the crystal cave. A short detour is worthwhile. Upon reaching the valley floor, you drive along a section of the main road to Eichberg, where a separate bicycle path has been created. The historic market town of Altstätten with its cozy alleys and noteworthy houses forms the center of the region. The Appenzeller railways take away the arduous climb back to Appenzell.
