Description
Adolf Dietrich, son of a Berlingen farmer, is today counted among the most important Swiss painters of the 20th century. A contemporary of Otto Dix, he was like him a painter of New Objectivity. Both lived in the 1930s on the western Lake Constance, one in Hemmenhofen on the Höri peninsula, the other on the Thurgau shore of the lake in Berlingen. The starting point of this 'foot journey' is the Adolf-Dietrich-Haus in Berlingen. Here Dietrich lived and worked throughout his life. The museum is managed by the Thurgau Art Society and is open on weekends from May to September (2-6 pm). Further paintings by the artist are exhibited in the Thurgau Art Museum in Kartause Ittingen.
The route begins with the garden of Minister Kern opposite Adolf Dietrich's residence – a frequently painted motif by the artist – and shows at three selected locations how the painter saw his Untersee landscape. Those wishing to continue walking in the footsteps of this painter, considered 'naive' because of his style, should take a hike from the museum along the lakeside ridge to Steckborn, as Dietrich did at least once a year.
