Description
Around the year 1133, the farming village Oberbalm received its first place of worship (Sancta Maria in spelunca = Our Lady in the Cave; Balm = cave, grotto). There was a miraculous image of Mary. Oberbalm became a pilgrimage site and soon as important as St. Vincent in Bern or the Beatus Cave at Lake Thun. A hollow way now leads up to Balmberg. In clear weather, the Lake Neuchâtel can even be seen from here. On the subsequent Egg hike over Gassershus–Berg–Schwendiholz (to Borisried 25 min, to Schwarzwasserbrücke 1 h 45 min)–Bumishus to Ratzenberg, you alternately enjoy the magnificent view of the Alps or across the Swiss Plateau to the Jura. The Imihubel (to Falebach–Toffen 1 h) and the nearby Bütschelegg, accessible via Oberblacken and Uecht, vie for the title of the most beautiful viewpoint in the Längenberg area.
