Description

Our tip for the next stage of the Bernina route:

  • Poschiavo: Charming village with majestic palaces and impressive churches.

  • Alp Grüm: Impressive viewpoint overlooking Cavaglia and the Valposchiavo to Italy.

The multi-day hike starts in the lovely Val Poschiavo. Take a deep breath because the Bernina route begins with an ascent of about 1200 meters in elevation. But don’t worry, the constantly changing views and landscapes soon make the steepness barely noticeable. And there are plenty of worthwhile "stopping points" for a rest.

Starting from the village, the ascent begins immediately, and always following the Cavaglia signposts, the path winds over alpine meadows and through deciduous and coniferous forests up to Cavaglia. If you have enough time, it’s worth visiting the glacier garden in Cavaglia. Not only are the beautifully polished glacial mills impressive, but the view of Val Poschiavo is spectacular. Past the Cavaglia train station, the Bernina route leads through the gorge and past Lagh da Palü up to the famous Alp Grüm curve of the Rhaetian Railway. Be sure to plan a stop at Alp Grüm for refreshment at one of the two charming viewpoint restaurants (Alp Grüm train station buffet or Belvedere Restaurant).

Once you reach Lago Bianco, it’s not far to the endpoint of the stage at Ospizio Bernina station.
