Description
In the 8th century, the Alemanni settled the area. Sigfrit is said to have settled with his clan in a floodplain, which is believed to have given the place its name, Signau. Until the administrative reform of 2010, Signau was the seat of the government governor of the district of the same name. At the starting point of the hike, at Signau station, follow the signpost to Waldhäusern. After a few meters, you reach the village street. The well-preserved village appearance is surprising. Now ascending past the church and continuing towards Ober Rainsberg, you pass through forest and along the forest edge, past the Ober Rainsberg farmstead to a rest area. This invites you to take a breather, as the greater part of the total elevation gain has been overcome here. The hike continues mostly through forest or meadows, sometimes uphill, then level or slightly downhill past Ofeneggalp to the inn and viewpoint Waldhäusern. Here you have the choice to stop by for food or rest at the rest area. Not only here do you enjoy the view of the ridges, meadows, forests, and ditches that characterize the Emmental landscape. The signpost Nidermattgraben indicates the further route. Initially on a ridge moderately, then steeper in the forest, you descend into Nidermattgraben. After a stretch on a hard surface, turn right after the hamlet Nidermatt towards Gassen - Signau. Passing by the church, the destination is reached shortly afterwards.
