Description

In the mid-20th century, the lifestyles and economies of the Alpine region changed significantly. The traditional knowledge that had been valid for a long time lost importance, values were reshuffled, and new opportunities and challenges emerged. As part of the project "Views in Space and Time," the cultural heritage and crafts of that time, as well as everyday life, are to be brought closer to today's generations. The aim of the interactive project is to preserve this knowledge from being forgotten.

At six selected locations in Uors and Surcasti, so-called viewpoints have been established. They address specific topics of life back then, such as rural crafts, the role of women, or the importance of cohesion in the village community.

Event Station 1: Uors Station 1 offers a view of the lower and middle Lugnez as well as the route of "Views in Space and Time" around Surcasti, which leads from here northwards on the historic local traffic route through Uors and then turning left down to Station 2 at the Valserrhein. The main topics here are mobility and historic traffic routes.

Event Station 2: Mulin Station 2 is located in front of the bridge over the Valserrhein, situated between the villages of Uors and Surcasti. The Mulin barbecue area includes an open firepit with a grill, firewood, table, bench, and slide, which can be used from mid-May to the end of October. The Valserrhein is very shallow at this point and invites paddling or building stone men. The main topics here are the Glenner and Vorderrhein. Contemporary witnesses report on agriculture.

Event Station 3: Parish Church Sogn Luregn Station 3 is situated on the castle hill with the parish church of Sogn Luregn, with views of the cultural landscape and various villages in the Lugnez. The main topics here are religion and history. Contemporary witnesses report on religion.

Event Station 4: Casa Caplutta at the entrance to Surcasti Station 4 is located at the entrance of Surcasti, where the “White House,” Casa Caplutta, is presented. As is clearly visible, features in the architectural style indicate a church-like building, hence the name Caplutta (chapel). The main topics here are the conflict-ridden Casa Caplutta and church festivals. Contemporary witnesses report on family, women, household, and nutrition.

Event Station 5a at Curtgin Grond (enclosure) in Surcasti Located in the middle of the village of Surcasti, views open onto the agriculturally used cultural landscape of lower Lugnez and the neighboring villages Uors, Tersnaus, and Camuns. To the north, the view falls on the Flimserstein and behind it the 3247-meter-high Ringelspitz, in the opposite direction into the Valser Valley. The main topics here besides the village of Surcasti are water scarcity and diversity of stone.

The further route (5b) runs via the Crap dalla Gneida station of the themed route “Places of Magic.” At the 180-degree bend of the village road, the Via Crusch leads to the end of the village, then turns left to the Trutg da Barnier board, and finally through meadows and the alder forest to the “Erlenstein” (station 5b). According to legend, the devil, enraged over the construction of the Sontga Catarina church in Tersnaus, wanted to destroy it with a huge stone. He missed the target, and the stone crashed with hellish noise into the valley floor. In anger, he then threw it up the slope (source text: “Places of Magic”). Further up, the route joins a concreted driveway in the Basdengias field, which is already mentioned in the chronicles of the 14th century. From there, it goes right back to Surcasti.

Event Station 6: Surcasti Station 6, like station 5, lies in the village of Surcasti and offers not only a close-up view of the houses but also views from above of the Casa da Luzi with its characteristic crib construction, as well as the schoolhouse and the church of Sogn Giusep. The main topics and the reports of contemporary witnesses are as follows: first drawer: village life and culture, second and third drawer: school system and career choice.
