Description
Eglisau in the canton of Zurich and the neighboring villages of Buchberg and Rüdlingen in the canton of Schaffhausen are characterized by viticulture. The south-facing slopes offer the best conditions for this. In addition, the Rhine bend offers a variety of views from the vineyards to the landscape along the High Rhine. Well-preserved timber-framed houses dating back to the 17th century enrich the typical Zurich Unterland townscape.
With the " Thur estuary flood protection and floodplain landscape" project, the canton of Zurich aims to revitalize the Thur floodplains near the estuary in order to reduce the risk of flooding in the future and protect the floodplains. New paths and facilities such as fireplaces, observation huts and viewing platforms have been built for visitors. The Thurauen Nature Center opened in 2011 as a gateway to the largest floodplain conservation area on the Swiss Plateau.
The next striking loop of the Rhine follows in Rheinau as a double loop. The town is surrounded on three sides by the Rhine and neighboring Germany. The former Benedictine monastery of Rheinau is located on an island in the Rhine.
