Description

Long-distance hiking is also possible in winter, and Via Mundaun is the best proof of that. The three-day winter hike starts on the outer edge of Friggahüs, a hamlet near Obersaxen. Right from the start, the path continuously ascends through snow-covered forests and over open alpine pastures. The scattered Maiensässe rest as silent witnesses of times past in the winter landscape.

After about two hours, the mountain restaurant Wali is reached. The sunny terrace invites you to rest, including a view of the Obersaxen Mundaun ski area and a large portion of Graubünden hospitality. Refreshed, you take on the last ascent of the day: In the middle of the white winter world – between two ski lifts yet away from the hustle and bustle – you reach the height of the Kartitscha mountain station.

Here the piste is crossed, and the view opens to the distinctive Piz Mundaun. The summit not only gives the long-distance hike its name but also accompanies the route over all three stages. Here the descent also begins: The path winds past Untermatt and then down to Meierhof, the main village of the Obersaxen Mundaun municipality.

Peace instead of hustle, nature instead of performance. That is what makes Via Mundaun special. It is not a mass hike but suitable for all who seek the authentic. It lets you immerse yourself in a region that even in peak season offers space to breathe and enjoy. The three stages are manageable for experienced winter hikers. Those who want can have their luggage transported from hotel to hotel.
