Salt is a main reason why so many industrial businesses settled in Pratteln. The first salt discovery in 1836 marked the start of industrialization. Carl Christian Friedrich Glenk founded the saltworks on Pratteln soil and named the place Schweizerhalle, which means «Swiss place where there is salt».
