To the Ramsenstock

At the top of the Ramsenburg forest lies the destination of the hike: the Rosenburg. The ascent is steep. It dates from a time when the lords of Rorschach ruled in Herisau. On the hike, you can also enjoy wide views: across the Fürstenland to Lake Constance and over the Appenzeller hills to the Säntis. The Rosenburg, also called Ramsenburg, is one of three castle ruins in the Herisau municipality area. Like the Rosenberg and Urstein castles, it was built in the Middle Ages and was the property of the knights of Rorschach. The Rosenburg was first mentioned in documents in 1270. Initially, it served as a fortification, later as an estate farm. In 1396, the Rosenburg was sold to the Abbey of St. Gallen and was destroyed in the Appenzell War in 1403. In the 1930s, the building remains were excavated and preserved. The ruin shows remains of the residential tower and a residential building. And in the courtyard, a deep sod well is preserved.
