Description
From Innertkirchen Grimseltor station, take the hiking trail across the Aare and turn right immediately after the bridge. Follow the Aare directly alongside the water until you reach the Aare gorge. Now it's a short, steep climb up to the eastern entrance to the gorge. The highlight of the hike follows: the imposing Aare Gorge. Loud rushing and quiet splashing alternate. The gorge, which is only one to two meters wide in places, can be explored over footbridges and through tunnels. At the western entrance, the path leads out of the gorge. Follow the road and cross to the other side of the Aare at Aareschlucht West station. Continue along Obersteinstrasse. At the next junction, turn right onto Wilerliweg. Shortly afterwards, the yellow-signposted hiking trail leads left onto the Restiweg. The trail leads uphill through the forest to the ruins of Resti Tower Castle. The tower, which dates back to the 13th century and was built on a rocky outcrop, offers a rewarding view over Meiringen. After visiting the tower, the trail descends along the Milibach, which you soon cross to the right, and shortly afterwards the Alpbach. The Kapellen path leads to St. Michael's Church, which, with its excavations, is an archaeological site of national importance. Turn left into Kirchgasse before finally reaching Meiringen railroad station.
