Description
Above the railway line, hike towards Bugnei. Shortly before Bugnei, you cross the impressive viaduct in Val Bugnei. It is worth making a short detour through the little village and the Via Romana to visit the chapel. On the sunny and usually windless side of the valley, you continue hiking to Mompé Tujetsch, always with a view of the mighty Piz Muraun.
Before the village, descend towards the train stop and further to the cantonal road. Now a traffic-free, paved road leads to the Rhine, which here has already grown into a small river. The ascent to Mompé Medel, through the forest and past pretty Maiensäss (alpine pasture huts), is somewhat steep, but the magnificent view of the monastery village fully compensates for the effort.
At the St. Valentin chapel, the descent begins again down to the Rhine, on a section of the former Lukmanier pack trail used by the Romans. In Cuflons, the waters squeeze through a gorge and during the hike you occasionally get a view into the riverbed with impressive glacial potholes.
At Camping Fontanivas, you can refresh yourself either in the restaurant with a cool drink or in the sparkling fresh water of the bathing lake. A final highlight is the stone-lined path that leads along the edge of Salapauna to the train station.
