Description

The stage starts in Cröt and initially passes the old stone footbridge into the secluded high valley of Madris. Along the Madris Rhine, the path runs through an elongated, primeval, and sparsely populated valley, which fascinates with its quiet, pristine landscape. In Sovräna, the ascent to the Val da la Prasignola begins, where the historic crossing into Bergell awaits.

An impressive staircase paved with stone slabs leads to the pass crossing at 2,724 m above sea level – a relic from times when cows and cattle were driven from Bergell to pasture in Madris in summer. The upper part of the Madris valley was already opened and agriculturally used by Bergell from the 14th century, which gives the route a special historical charm.

Shortly after the pass, special attention is required: here are some exposed passages secured with chains. It is important to follow exclusively the white-red-white marked trail signs, as traces of old routes are still visible in the rockfall-prone scree channels. The long descent takes place on narrow mountain trails with numerous hairpin bends and offers repeatedly impressive views into the Bergell mountain world.

After passing the alpine settlements of Lăira and Däir, the path leads down shady forest trails to Soglio. At 1,100 m above sea level, hikers will find a village rich in history, which, with its Mediterranean flair, narrow alleys, and sun-drenched stone houses, forms an impressive end to this expressive stage.
