Description
The ascent of the Tremola from Airolo to the Gotthard Pass is one of the most iconic and historic climbs in Switzerland. The road, largely paved with granite cobblestones, follows the original route of the pass, offering an authentic and timeless experience. From the centre of Airolo, you take the historic Tremola, which immediately unfolds with a series of regular hairpins. The gradient is steady and never extreme, but the cobbled surface makes the climb physically demanding and technical, requiring good pacing. The environment quickly becomes alpine: meadows, dry-stone walls and increasingly open views over the valley. In the final kilometres, the road winds through numerous spectacular hairpins, offering a unique view over the entire route below. Reaching the pass, at an altitude of 2,106 m, is a true symbolic achievement for every road cyclist. There is the possibility to continue briefly to the summit or to connect with other major alpine climbs.
