Description
A few steps west of the Aarwangen railway station lies the Tierlihaus, an impressive row and round building built in 1767 for the menagerie owner Jakob Egger. Wild animals, birds of prey, and oriental cityscapes adorn the richly painted facade. From the station, Riedgasse leads towards the Aare riverbank. From there, a footpath follows the forest edge along the base of the slope to the nearby Wynau power plant in Oberwynau. The Aare reservoir above the weir is a nature reserve. Past the plant entrance, you reach the narrow path that follows the uninterrupted wooded Aare riverbank. At Wynauer Rank, you can overlook a beautiful river landscape with small islands. The church of Wynau is one of the oldest places of worship in Oberaargau (around 1100). In 1912, wall paintings were discovered in the choir, which had been overpainted during the Reformation period. The renovation in 1979 largely restored it to the Romanesque style. A narrow, charming riverside path leads to the covered wooden bridge of Murgenthal, where you ascend to the train station.
