Description
The peculiar place name Müntschemier is interpreted in different ways. It probably goes back to the «monachi», the monks of the St. Johannsen monastery endowed here. According to popular interpretation, people complained after a devastating plague: «O mier arme Möntsche mier!» And the young men wooed the only surviving girl: «Müntschi mier, Müntschi mier!» From the Müntschemier station over the railway crossing and shortly southwards to the main canal. Follow this towards the forest. Along the northern edge of the state forest it now goes across the wide cultivated area of the Great Moos. Along the way wonderful views to Schaltenrain, Jolimont, and Chasseral. Beyond the main road and the railway line you reach the turnoff to Sugiez. After bypassing the large Linder estate through another protected forest strip to the Trois Lacs campsite at the Canal de la Broye. Here you cross the elegant wooden Rotary Bridge and follow the canal to the La Sauge Nature Center. Cross the area and before the beach forest turn onto the straight floodplain forest path that leads to Cudrefin. Pure delight for nature lovers, as along this section there are various opportunities to observe the rich birdlife, pristine vegetation, wild thickets, grass snakes (non-venomous!), and other reptiles.
