RadArena/St.Gotthard: Susten-Grimsel-Furka

Best Time of Year
Description
The route starts in Andermatt and leads through the Schöllenen to Göschenen and further to Wassen. From Wassen, you ride into the lovely Meien Valley, from where it goes through the rugged mountain world up to the Susten Pass. Once you have climbed the pass, you will be greeted by the Steingletscher glacier. No other route shows the contrasts of the Gotthard region as clearly.
Coming from Innertkirchen, you pass the station of the Gelmerbahn – the second steepest funicular in Europe, with gradients up to 106% – which takes you up to Lake Gelmer. Follow the railway’s example and climb, past Lake Grimsel, up to the pass summit, where marmots keep watch. At the Grimsel Pass, the impressive Crystal Grotto invites you to visit. Through several short hairpin bends, it goes downhill to Gletsch, where the Furka steam railway has its mountain station.
Hardly arrived in Gletsch, the route already leads you into the climb of the third pass. From the Furka pass road, you can once again admire the terrifying hairpin construction of the Grimsel Pass. Shortly before the summit, you pass the Hotel Belvédère, from where you can enjoy an impressive view of the Rhone Glacier. Following in the footsteps of James Bond in the film Goldfinger, you can enjoy the picturesque landscape and breathtaking pass road on the Uri side of the Furka Pass during the descent.
