Description

From Hinterfultigen, you stay on the scenic height until Chromen. The view has long since widened westward to the Schwarzenburg and Freiburg regions as well as to the Seeland and the Jura. The little road gently descends to the Hof Moos. The view of the rock bands of the deeply cut Schwarzwasser Gorge is impressive. Soon a path winds extraordinarily steeply down the rocky gorge slope to the Bütschelbach footbridge (to Borisried–Oberbalm 2h, –Niederscherli 2h40). You then follow the equally deeply incised brook to its mouth into the Schwarzwasser in the Sackau. The high, forested rock slopes keep all noise away here. Solitude is refreshing. The river and path make large loops from one side of the valley to the other. Small covered wooden bridges facilitate several crossings. At the old Schwarzwasser bridge (to the train station 15 min) you cross the river for the last time. The adjacent building was once an inn at the only direct crossing between Schwarzenburg and Bern. When the high bridge was built in 1882, the guesthouse was moved up to the new road and in 1907 it even received a railway connection. At the confluence of Schwarzwasser and Sense, you turn around a rocky headland. This is the most popular place to gather during the warm season. Solitude and quiet are over. Soon, however, the silence of the forest surrounds you again.
