Description

111 pile dwelling sites in six countries in the Alpine region belong to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage "Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps." Four of them are located in Thurgau. The pile dwelling villages have one thing in common: they all lay by the water and are today preserved under oxygen-poor layers like in a prehistoric time capsule, which revealed the most precise insights into life at that time during excavations. On the "Pfahlbautourgau" bike route, you follow the traces of the first settled farmers in the region along Lake Constance, across the Seerücken down to the Seebach Valley, up to the cantonal capital; Frauenfeld. Two World Heritage sites are visited on the way. Thanks to videos for smartphones (scan the QR code on the information boards in the area), what is hidden underwater is made visible. Finally, the Museum of Archaeology in Frauenfeld puts together the last missing puzzle pieces. Return to Kreuzlingen by a half-hour train ride from Frauenfeld.
