Description
The hike begins in Elm and mostly follows the Sernf river to Wichlen. There, one of the few shooting ranges where the military still train with live ammunition is located. However, we keep left and take the ascent towards Alp Jetz underfoot. After overcoming the first two stages, we reach the Häxenseeli and after another 200 meters of elevation gain, the pass height with the Panixerpass hut is reached. The hut is unguarded; a rest is definitely recommended. If tired, you can also stay overnight there and continue hiking to Panix (Pigniu) the next day.
The Russian general Suvorov also took the route over the Panixerpass on October 6, 1799, after the French blocked his path northward near Näfels. In heavy snowfall, the extremely arduous march began, and the drama was preordained; most of the army paid with their lives on that fateful night.
