Description

With the Niederurnen-Morgenholz aerial cableway, you can easily reach Morgenholz, where the sculpture trail starts right at the mountain station. Shortly after, at the Baselbieter holiday home, you can strap on your snowshoes. From there, you travel through beautiful landscapes, up and down, more and more into the valley, which repeatedly appears Nordic. After the Hirzli restaurant, it goes a bit steeper up the mountain. The ascent is worth it, as you can bask in the sun in the area below Vorder- and Ober Planggen on sunny days. A very attractive section of the route!

Repeatedly you encounter the snow-covered wooden sculptures made by the local wood sculptor Thomas Jud. And again and again there are wonderful views of the Glarus Alps and towards Lake Walen up to the Churfirsten.

The detour climbs about 240 meters in altitude and takes around 90 minutes round trip, toward the Rossweidhöchi district border up to the outermost point Mälchterli (1521 m above sea level). The same return route passes the blockhouse in Mettmen. There you can rest well seated under a roof. By the way, the blockhouse is the first overnight stop on the stages of the long-distance hiking trail Via Glaralpina (www.viaglaralpina.ch). In summer, besides more animal sculptures, there is also a new adventure playground and several fire pits here.

Via a short but rewarding (because scenic) loop, you later reach the prepared winter hiking trail, which then leads back toward Bodenberg, where you can warm up and refresh at the mountain restaurant Hirzli (note opening hours, as it is not always open). From there, you can choose whether to follow the outbound trail or the road back to the cable car mountain station.
