Description
The starting point of this hike can be reached from Kandersteg by taxi bus. This must be reserved in advance at Kander Reisen Tel. 033 671 11 71. After a 25-minute bus ride through the impressive Gasterntal valley, you arrive at Selden (1550 m). The well-marked hiking trail begins with crossing the suspension bridge. Over switchbacks, 300 meters of altitude are overcome in the next 60 minutes to the Gfellalp (1845 m). The path continues to rise over alpine pastures and reaches Läckboden, a plateau with an impressive view into the valley basin and its rock walls. Next is the ascent under the east face of Balmhorn and up to Balme at 2400 m. This is followed by a short descent over the moraine onto the glacier, which is well marked with poles and crossed. The path then leads to the opposite moraine and follows it southwards to a rocky incline. During the last 45 minutes, some steep sections in rocky terrain must still be mastered, these are in places secured with wire ropes. After the strenuous ascent, the hiker is rewarded with a view of the Valais four-thousanders, and finally the hut is in sight, which will be reached in a few minutes.
