Description

Welcome to the Interregio hiking trail! Together we explore the tri-border area between Switzerland, France, and Germany and get to know a fascinating and varied part of Europe! The three major hiking clubs of the region, the hiking trails of both Basels, the Vosges Club, and the Black Forest Club, have jointly maintained this cross-border path since the 1980s, which has now been revised and newly marked to invite you to discover the tri-border region!

The sixth stage begins in the canton of Basel-Landschaft with its capital Liestal on the Ergolz. Even in Roman times, the river was crucial for the water supply of the Roman city six kilometers away, Augusta Raurica. Above Liestal, a man-high aqueduct was built in the first century AD, which can still be partially visited and walked through in the Heidenloch. One of the largest Roman estates in Switzerland was also uncovered. The huge Villa Munzach presumably belonged to a wealthy Roman from nearby Augusta Raurica. It was inhabited until the High Middle Ages.

From Liestal, the path leads via the Sichtern into the canton of Solothurn, through the villages of Nuglar, Büren, and Hochwald to the Gempen plateau. After the hamlet of Herrenmatt, it goes back to the canton of Basel-Landschaft and down into the Birs valley to Aesch.
