Description

The bike route along the Aabach leads through one of the most interesting and scenically attractive industrial-historical areas of the canton of Aargau to Hallwyl Castle.

The region between Wildegg, Lenzburg, and Lake Hallwil is one of the core regions of industrialization in the canton of Aargau. Along the Aabach, there have been a total of 28 companies using water power as an energy source over the last 250 years. The textile industry initially produced its products in manufactories, then in mechanized spinning mills and weaving mills. The basis of this development was textile home work, which experienced a great boom in the Lenzburg region since the mid-18th century.

Use of water power and the textile industry formed the basis for further industrial enterprises. Numerous witnesses of this time are still preserved, partly repurposed and newly used. Along the scenically attractive hiking trail between Lake Hallwil and the Aare, many company buildings can still be seen. These include the Lenzburg oxygen plant, the Sigismühle, the Müller coloured weaving mill, and the Upper Mill in Seon. The Association for Industrial Culture on the Aabach has created information boards for the individual buildings and developed the IndustriekulTOUR Aabach app.

The bike tour ends at the most beautiful water castle in Switzerland: Hallwyl Castle. Thematic guided tours for school classes last one hour, workshops 2.5 hours.
